HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY POST

The Recession Is Over?

Yea! I missed this one. According to a report by some very smart and influential economists, the recession actually ended in June of 2009. Check out the Yahoo! News post here.

Tell that to the 15-20 million or so Americans who lost their jobs and are still out of work. Go to a job fair and watch the 60-year old men with their briefcase full of resumes who are going for jobs geared toward recent college graduates. Try being a recent college graduate.

This story is a perfect example of the disconnect between academia and the typical American. Or between academics and plain old common sense. For those of us who don't live or work in an "ivory tower", the measure of whether the economy is healthy or not is as basic as whether or not you have to struggle to pay your mortgage or if you have a job or you don't.

The Deepwater Oil Spill Is Over!

Well, it only took all spring and summer, but it appears the oil spill in the Gulf has been plugged. Yea! There is still an awful lot of oil floating around there in the Gulf of Mexico, but I guess the only way to heal the water is to not pump any more crude oil into it. I'm doing cartwheels as I type this.

Any word on whether or not the Federal government was going to take a long look at prohibiting deep water drilling or on insisting for stricter regulations on the oil industry? Um, no...and don't hold your breath. Remember who really calls the shots on Capitol Hill.

Peace...
