MISCELLANEOUS MUSINGS ON A MONDAY...

You know your job is going away soon when you have time to post a blog from work. You also know your job is going away soon when you don't really care if you get caught or not. (On the off chance this is being monitored, don't worry, all my responsibilities are finished for the day and the highlight for the rest of the afternoon will be turning on the Rockies playoff game after 4p.)

Some thoughts from the last few days...
-------------------------------

Obama Named Nobel Peace Prize Winner and AL MVP

I am unabashed fan of the man's work, life story and ambitions, but giving President Obama the Nobel Peace Prize nine months into his presidency (after nominating him two weeks after he took office) would be like giving me a Lifetime Achievement award at the Oscars for writing five unproduced screenplays. Even though I think my sci-fi magnum opus SATURN IS FALLING is pretty damn good, thank you very much!

We Americans who elected Obama as a reaction to eight years of warmongering, environmental neglect and general corruption by George W. Bush appreciate the gesture, but please Oslo, don't cheapen your own award. Consider that Barack Obama has a Nobel Peace Prize and Mathatma Gandhi has none. Such an award will give far more ammunition to his ever more virulent critics than it will give comfort to his supporters.

Broncos Now 5-0; Rockies on the Brink

I've eaten so much crow about Josh McDaniels the last few weeks, I think I am starting to sprout black feathers. Every time I caution my fellow Broncomaniacs to temper their enthusiasm, that the season is still early, that Mike Shanahan's Broncos have started fast plenty of times before only to fade and miss the playoffs, every time I say these things the Broncos win again over a more impressive opponent and people just call me a "hater."

So, I'm going to temper my enthusiasm less and enjoy the ride. It still wouldn't shock me if the Broncos somehow missed the playoffs (they have an incredibly thin margin of error...they are not going to blow anyone other than Cleveland-Oakland-KC out), but I have to admit that 11-5 and a division title is not only looking possible, but like the minimum we should expect at this point.

As for the Rox...blame the umps, the cold, the Hennesey (shout out to Jamie Foxx!) or whatever, but you had it all in your hands in Game 3 and walked too many people and missed on too many timely big hits. Cliff Lee can be had, but if the Rockies season ends today, it will be disappointing but it will hardly be shocking.

Quote of the Day

From Dan Patrick's daily sports podcast:

"Don't let the scarecrow play with the matches..."

This is in reference to when ESPN wrongheadedly hired--and then quickly fired--Rush Limbaugh to do football commentary.

Peace...
