Tracy and I went to the proverbial dinner and a show last night at LoDo's Walnut Room. We saw Greg Laswell with opening act Elizabeth & The Catapult (who in their own way were actually more impressive.) We were there to enjoy the show, which we did, so I didn't take notes or pictures or anything, but I can say that the whole night was well worth it. We only spent $47--dinner was free, $20 for two tickets, $12 for the Elizabeth & The Catapult CD (I HAD to do it) and about $15 in drinks and tips. By the way, I talked to Elizabeth from the opening act and she was as nice, sweet and cute as could be, although she should maybe tighten up her math skills since I gave her a $20 bill for the $12 CD and she tried to give me $12 change. As we all know, the music business LOVES to eat it's young and rip off it's artists.

Factoid That Would Interest Only Me, Part 1: Every episode of CBS' hit show The Mentalist has either red or some reference to the color red in the episode title (which I believe refers to the lead character's obsession with "Johnny Red", the man who supposedly murdered his wife.)
Queens is to the Colorado Rockies what kryptonite is to Superman.
All the comic book-based movies that are being made and have been made, someone please explain to me how Wonder Woman, one of the best known and best-loved titles, still hasn't made it to the big screen? How is it that Thor and The Punisher (twice!) will have big screen movies before her? Let's get this thing made and cast Megan Fox before she gets either too expensive or too old.
Hollywood has ruined Comic-Con. But we still get to see some great previews and trailers from the convention.
I really wish Facebook had a "don't like" button.
In a way it amuses me that people actually believe that a chaotic, multiple payer health care system which doubles in cost every decade and regularly denies coverage to people who have jobs and make payments just because they are unregulated seems preferable to a government-run single payer system that fixes costs and tries to cover everyone so that neither businesses nor consumers have to foot the bill.

My friend Cap is sort of a beerologist. His recommendation of the week: Kona Longboard, which I can vouch for as being very good. And I'm not even that big a beer fan.
Cost of my Grimes Family Reunion (on my Mom's side): $125 per couple without kids. Which includes "rap praise performance" by Jedediah, $12 for "family portraits" and a Sunday "remembrance of the elders and tribute to Michael Jackson." Cost of two tickets to the August 7th Cubs-Rockies game that same weekend: $56. Guess which one I'm choosing?
Factoid That Would Interest Only Me, Part 2: The Sears Tower in Chicago was renamed this month to the Willis Tower ("what you talkin' about?"). There have been 48,000 plus signatures on a petition to change the name back. There hasn't been a single employee of the Sears Roebuck Company in that building since 1994 and the company sold the building in 1995.
Remember to always spay and neuter your pets, but not anyone else because that would be illegal.

THIS & THAT
A few quick thoughts, notes and comments from the Little Condo on the Prairie:
--I know the Southern Senators who temporarily derailed the auto bailout plan were doing it for their own politically selfish reasons (mainly, they make a lot of cars in the South but the companies are all Japanese and the shops are all non-union, and the last thing a Southern senator wants to do is to help the unions), but part of me still doesn't want the bailout to go through. I've calmed down now from my last post, but you have to wonder where the handouts end?
--Four Christmases (PG-13): Not a bad movie, not as totally predictable as you might think and even though Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn have little chemistry with each other, they each light up the screen in their own way. I enjoyed it. Give it a "B".
--Take a quick survey of yourself and your friends. Out of every five people you know, how many have been laid off or are really worried about being laid off? For myself, I'd say its four out of five.
--As I write this, the Nuggets, the DENVER NUGGETS, are the second best team in the Western Conference. I have a feeling it won't last, but what a difference Chauncey Billups and a little defense makes.
--Only 13 days left until Christmas and I'm making my first uneasy foray into the malls tomorrow. Like a lot of Americans, I'm not buying very much this year (just a few things for Tracy, really) but I'm curious to see if there's a palpably different atmosphere in the stores and malls than there has been in past years.
--Must see movies of the Christmas/Pre-Oscar season: Milk, Frost/Nixon, Doubt, Slumdog Millionaire and Gran Torino. No, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ISN'T on that list, but I'll probably wind up checking that out too...eventually.

WE ARE THE CHANGE YOU MAKE
My father-in-law wrote another killer post, this time about how getting Barack Obama elected president would be great, but it would mean nothing if what is expected to be a Democratically dominated Congress treats the occasion as payback time instead of an opportunity to really attack the deep crises facing this country. Me, I'm going to take a little break from my pleading, begging and imploring to get people to vote for Obama (or just to vote in general) to bring back one of my favorite posts, the List of Random Things I'm Thinking About Column, also known as The I'm Feeling Lazy Tonight Post or It's Hard Out There for a Pimp:

Did you see tonight (Wednesday) when Tyra and the producers came up with the brilliant idea of putting the clueless models in tight, green bodysuits and then chromakeying (is that what they still call it?) their bodies and faces out of the fashion show? It's called fourth grade civics and Palin appears to need a refresher course.
**If you haven't checked out TV on the Radio's "Dear Science," album, you have been missing out on one of the best albums of the year.

**Would you be willing to take 5% of your salary off the top if it would go to a National Health Care fund in return for having an automatic deduction of $1000 or more in your annual income tax? I sure would.
**There are a lot of good teachers out there and some really great ones. There has even been a lot of creative thinking in recent years about how to re-imagine what is taught in classrooms and how to create new incentives to get kids to go to class and do their homework. But, as much as it pains me to say it, putting more money into the schools is not going to turn around the performance of our nation's education system The values have to come from home and from parents--that's what worked for me and for most of the people I know. It's the only way to make a difference. Otherwise, we're just asking our nation's educators to make the proverbial silk out of a sow's ear.
