6 x 7: Awesome Singles or Downloads

Kanye West, "Runaway [original version]"

I'm no music expert (hardly!), but I feel like I do know a compelling track when I hear one. Intrigued by "Runaway" from the very first moment I heard it debuted on the MTV Music Video Awards (and what was I doing watching the MTV Music Video Awards exactly? And when does MTV show these alleged music videos?), it proved to be one of my favorite downloads of the year. Check it out. Yes, Kanye West is an asshole, but at least he knows it and has the balls to write a rap about it. By the way, he may be the most interesting pop music producer working today, so he can take a whiny, self-lacerating piece of martyrdom like "Runaway" and make it dramatic, interesting, catchy and thought-provoking all at the same time.

Kanye makes you love his shit and then hate yourself for loving it. That's a pretty cool trick.

One note of caution though...the original pre-album version is shorter, tighter and better than the version that wound up on his just-released opus My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. So, if you really want this song, look for the version that is NOT on the album.

Sample Lyric: "Raise a toast to the douchebags/Raise a toast to the assholes..."

If You Like This Song, You May Also Like: pretty much anything else Kanye has done from his last two albums, Lil' Wayne's "I'm Single", Eminem's Recovery album.

Peace...
