WASHINGTON D.C. Dateline: January 20, 2017
"Today, Jennifer Granholm took the oath of office as America's 45th (and first female) president, something that might not have been thought possible before the remarkable, groundbreaking presidency of Barack Obama. Obama weathered an often rocky and turbulent two-term presidency, but is credited with lifting the U.S. economy out of a deep global recession, restoring the prestige of the United States around the world, providing greater security to Afghanistan and generally raising the American self-image after enduring the dark days of the Bush Administration.
Re-elected by a narrow margin over both independent Sarah Palin and Republican nominee Bobby Jindahl in the 2012 elections, Obama finally succeeded in ending America's almost seven year recession during his second term, laying the groundwork for the Democrats to retain the White House and the House of Representatives behind the presidential campaign of Granholm, the likable and attractive former governor of Michigan.
In what could be perceived as a bit of bipartisan gamesmanship, Granholm took the oath of office from Chief Justice John Roberts on the family Bible of former Republican president (and Michigan congressperson) Gerald R. Ford. Afterwards, she pledged to continue America's economic recovery and complete the mission that Obama set forth to "completely wean America off of dependence on foreign oil by the end of my first term." She thanked President Obama for returning "humanity, decency and compassion for all Americans" to the White House and she promised to try and "follow in Obama's footsteps" in attempting to keep America at the forefront of green technology and scientific innovation.
President Granholm likened the recent American renaissance to the Detroit Lions recent back-to-back Super Bowl championships, noting that the Lions went 0-16 in 2008 and lost 25 games in a row before building into a perennial contender that is now the envy of the NFL..."
Isn't it nice to dream in the possible again and to believe that the person in the Oval Office is on your side for a change? Congratulations to President Obama and to all of America. I've never been prouder.
Peace...
