I am not anti-American. I love this country. I still think this is the greatest country on Earth, the only one that has ever tried to perfect the democratic ideal for every one of it's citizens. I do not believe that trying to do something great and occasionally failing means a nation is bad. The bad nations never put their people first and let the desires and goals of their ruling elite set the agenda for the nation for generations. What has Communist China ever done for it's people except make them richer? Look at the repressive religious states around the world.
But you also get a lot of false patriotism around this time of year. Speaking out about America's injustices and inequities is even more patriotic than singing our praises. Because this IS a country that does try to improve itself (at least, that has been our history), only through speaking and acting on behalf of positive change is there hope making the United States live more completely up its stated ideals.
Sorry for the lecture, but is there a better time to reflect on these things than on the Fourth of July?
You Tube Clip of the Week
Go to and type "Bush Goes Nuts on Matt Lauer". It's scary when the leader of the Free World makes an impassioned (and dishonest) defense of torture. But the clip is real. Goodbye Dubya and good riddance.
I'm heading off to vacation for a couple of days, but I'll have something to post on Tuesday night I think. Until then, enjoy the holiday. And be on the lookout for a possible podcast, featuring yours truly, Z and some others you may know or have heard about coming soon!
Peace...
