TURNING THE HEADLINES INSIDE OUT

Hey gang...sorry I've been away for so long. I think the older you get, the harder it gets to blog regularly. Or maybe I've just been really lazy!

When I'm uncertain what I want to blog about, but I know I need to blog about SOMETHING, its always good to turn to the headlines. Something is bound to get my dander up...

Supreme Court Votes 5-4 Against Two Desegregation Busing Plans

I often wonder, are desegregation plans another form of discrimination? It seems to me if a school district wants to bus school children across town to promote racial and ethnic diversity--its a proven fact that poor minority children get far less money per capita spent on them in the public schools than middle or upper class white kids--then the school district isn't hampering anybody's freedom to attend school where they want to, they are looking out for the best public interest of their students while attempting to make the best use of the district's tax dollars.

All this, apparently, is not a good idea in the eyes of the esteemed members of our nation's Supreme Court. Even though parents with money send their kids to private schools or suburban districts all the time, circumventing court or district-ordered busing, the Bush-packed Supreme Court seems threatened by the very notion of school districts acting in their own best interests to try and address racial imbalances. Of course, I'm not surprised but how could I not be a little disgusted.

I rode the school bus to two elementary schools, a junior high and a high school while growing up in Denver. Sometimes it was hard to participate in afterschool activities. I lost up to an hour and a half each day riding the bus in high school, time that could have been better spent studying, doing after school projects, working or just spending time at home with my Mom. But you know what? I wouldn't trade it for anything. I made life long friends and I found myself in an environment where students were not treated as second-class citizens and I was exposed to a range of different races and ethnicities. That's what going to school with the general public should be about and as long as government authorities aren't putting a gun to anyone's head to force them to go somewhere, this should be lauded, not legislated against by the bench.

On LARRY KING LIVE, Paris Hilton Says Jail Was "Traumatic", Vows That It Has Changed Her

Now the bitch is in Hawaii, vacationing in disguise. Waaaah waaaah! I see she's really turned over a new leaf.

She says she wants to build a family type environment for ex-cons just released from jail, to provide them with the nurturing and guidance she believes they really need to stay out of jail. I have a name for this potential facility:

THE HALFWAY HILTON

But it will still be 100% bullshit.

My Movie Ratings So Far This Summer:

KNOCKED UP A-
OCEAN'S 13 B
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END C+ (too long a title, too long a movie)
SPIDER-MAN 3 B+

This weekend I hope to see either SICKO or RATATOUILLE and I'll share my thoughts on whichever one I get to.

And now, a random, pointless picture I took of some very big swans in a park:

Peace....
