Thoughts on Election '06
Happy Halloween fellow blogophiles! Been wondering why I've been so (relatively) quiet during this midterm election season? Not so much? Don't care? Well, it's time to do a quick update anyway.
The Republicans are going down in flames. Bush is a lying a-hole. Republican Senate candidate George Allen (Va.) has been lambasted for his alleged frequent use of the "N-word" and now his staff members supposedly beat up the blogger who has been leaking information about it in his blog. Marc Foley is a pedophile and House Speaker Dennis Hastert has been covering for him. The gas prices are going down, no doubt a gift from the oil companies for whom Bush-Cheney-Rove does their bidding. Amazingly, the general public isn't buying it. That just about sums it up.
So...why do I feel so uneasy? Bush is about to be a lame duck with at least one, maybe both houses of Congress controlled by the Democrats. For the first time in a long time, people don't seem to be buying into a lot of the typical conservative GOP tricks like shifting the debate to gay marriage or race baiting. The Iraqi occupation and the terrible toll it is taking on the troops, Iraq, America's image and our economy remains the center of our discontent and rightly so. But I don't feel like celebrating, not one bit. The Democrats have a rare opportunity but I don't get the sense that they have the mettle to really get us out of Iraq or a positive enough message to inspire Americans that better days lie ahead. John Kerry keeps (allegedly) putting his foot in his mouth. (Although if we're really honest about it, his "joke" has a grain of truth--young people who have college degrees aor money, by and large, are not the ones on the front lines of Iraq). Progressives (or at least non-conservatives) can't afford to squander an opportunity like this because who knows when it will come along again.
