READER MAIL & Miscellany

Found this comment in the old inbox this morning:

"After reading your latest blog entry, something has become crystal clear to me: You know nothing about football (soccer).

Nothing.

You poor man."

I do know the author of this missive, and he is having some fun with me, but he's also right. I know nothing about "football". Of course, I never claimed to be an expert. This I know though--no way Team USA advances out of group. I'd lay even odds they can't beat Ghana--a team that WILL get out of group. Just one novice's observation.

You can pay me now, or pay me later...

Random Thoughts

--The new Keane (pictured) album sounds pretty nice, although not all that different from their last album. I can hear my cousin Braydon now--"Bro, Keane is totally like Coldplay Lite"--I know, I know, but I would argue they do Coldplay better than Coldplay does right now. And I think the new track, "Broken Toy" off of their new album is pretty special.

--Here's a review of a movie that I haven't seen that hasn't come out yet that I guarantee will be pretty accurate--CLICK, starring Adam Sandler will be yet another semi-humorous It's A Wonderful Life retread, except with boob and fart jokes. The only thing worse than Sandler being sweet and treacly is Sandler trying to be a serious actor (witness the mystifingly well-reviewed Punch Drunk Love and the even worse Spanglish).

--North Korea wants to do a long range missle test to show that they can potentially strike the United States with nuclear warheads. The general consensus is that they feel ignored with all of the hullabulloo over Iran's nuclear development program. I think they have a point--Iran is run by conservative Muslim clerics with a hatred of Israel, but they are nonetheless a decade away from even an embryonic working nuclear weapons capacity. North Korea has nuclear missles NOW and is run by megalomaniacal dictator who hates US and really resents all those U.S. troops stationed along his country's border with South Korea. Which one do you think our administration should have been paying more attention to?

Peace.

Now, Reggie, surely you're not implying that football is a "flawed" sport simply because the Team USA aren't world-beaters (yet). I never said that they'd progress out of a very tough group (probably second only to "Group of Death" C with Argentina, Holland, Ivory Coast and Serbia & Montenegro). Well done to Ghana for making it to the knock-out rounds, and best of luck against Brazil (who just might be there for the taking... although they're starting to turn on the style).

The USA are a very good side and will continue to progress-- just wait until Freddy Adu makes his World Cup debut in 2012! (Think he can come up with a nickname that beats DaMarcus Beasley's "Run DMB"?)
