THIS JUST IN

A few random thoughts on a late July evening...

--A caller on Randi Rhodes' radio show argued that the current housing boom is proof that the economy is doing well and that high home prices in New York, LA and San Francisco have always been that way because of high demand and limited land. Bullshit! Across America only rich people can afford to buy a house without either going superdeep in debt or having to live dozens of miles from where they work. And rich people--truly rich people, households that make over a half million dollars a year without carrying more than half that amount in debt--continue to get richer regardless of who is in the White House, it's all just a matter of degrees. It's the rest of us who suffer under the current administration, with it's focus on war, terrorism, lies and coverups. The Bush Administration doesn't even count unemployed people who no longer receive unemployment benefits, doctoring the numbers to minimize the amount of "unemployed" people on the rolls. But the truth is scarier than any fiction.

--Some DVD recommendations: The Motorcycle Diaries, Wonder Falls (TV - a forgotten comedy-drama gem canclled after 6 episodes in 2003) and the recently released The War of the Roses (dark comedy masterpiece about divorce starring Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas).

--I shouldn't admit to watching this, but as that train wreck of a show, THE REALWORLD version 9066 or whatever, plays in the background, but the current crop of overexposed young people may be the most oversexed, spoiled and ridicuolous bunch of wannabes they have yet put on TV.
